THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Azumi Setoda
Azumi Setoda occupies the estate a shipping and salt family called home for two centuries, on Ikuchijima island in Japan's Seto Inland Sea, and dinner here is served on the same tableware that family used generations ago, its glaze carrying the trade routes that built Setoda's fortune. Built in 1876 and restored, not reinvented, by Kyoto architect Shiro Miura, the two-story building keeps its original sukiya-zukuri lines: no hard walls between guest rooms, dining space, and lounge, only tall marigaki fences borrowed from shrine ritual, so each of the 22 rooms across four types opens onto its own garden or balcony and ends the day with a hinoki cypress bath built into the room. Breakfast runs simple and local from seven, and dinner, not served on Tuesdays or Wednesdays and only by reservation, follows whatever the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding mountains are offering that week, with no fixed technique attached to any ingredient. Beyond the marigaki fences, Setoda sits on the Shimanami Kaido cycling route between Hiroshima and Ehime, citrus groves on one side, tidal currents on the other, and a public bathhouse across the street. This suits someone who wants an afternoon with nothing scheduled beyond a cypress bath and a walk through a port town, not someone looking for a lobby full of activity boards or a swimming pool. There is no elevator, and between 22 rooms and a policy against hen or stag parties, it is not built for a crowd. What no comparable ryokan-style property nearby can claim: this house has stood, unaltered, since 1876, and the family that built it is still set on the table every evening. On Ikuchijima island, Azumi Setoda occupies a 150-year-old shipping family's estate, where dinner is still served on their original tableware and every room ends the day with a hinoki cypress bath. Twenty-two rooms, no elevator, and a strict no hen-or-stag policy mean it rewards quiet over crowds.

Meals at Azumi Dining are served on tableware passed down through the Horiuchi family for generations. The pieces arrived in Setoda through the same maritime trade that built the family's fortune, and after roughly 150 years they remain in use at breakfast and dinner, carrying the port town's history in their glaze.
Cycling on the nearby Shimanami Kaido route is available as a guided experience.
