THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Nishimuraya Honakan
Willow trees and stone bridges line the Otani River a few minutes from the door, and in the evening guests in rented yukata drift between the town's public hot spring baths on a pass that comes free with the stay. Nishimuraya Honkan has held its ground in Kinosaki Onsen for 150 years, and it shows in the details rather than the marketing: thirty-four Japanese-style rooms across two low floors, tatami underfoot, futons instead of beds, sliding paper doors opening onto a garden that was clearly designed with as much care as the rooms themselves. A few of those rooms, Asuka and Kangetsu among them, come with their own open-air rock or porcelain bath and a private walled garden, so guests never have to leave for a soak. Dinner follows the season, Tajima beef through the warmer months and crab once winter sets in, served privately in the room rather than plated in a common hall. None of the ryokans clustered around the same river can match six generations under one roof and 165 years of continuous history, and a sister property 700 metres away adds its own free hot-spring baths to the pass. This is not the place for a family with a toddler in tow or anyone who needs a lift, since neither exists here, and children nine and under are not admitted. It suits travellers who have done hotels and now want the slower, more exacting rhythm of a proper onsen stay, tattoo policies, bathing tax and passport photocopying included. Staff manage the crossover in Japanese, English, French and Chinese, and a shuttle meets guests at the station. A 150-year-old ryokan on the Otani River where dinner changes with the season and select rooms have their own open-air bath. No lift, no young children, and a free pass to every public hot spring in town.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Every guest receives a complimentary pass to all seven public hot spring baths scattered through Kinosaki Onsen, each said to grant a different blessing, from beauty to good fortune. The tradition is to stroll the willow-lined streets in a yukata, bath-hopping between them, a custom the town has practised for over 1,300 years.
