THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Fufu Nikko
Fufu Nikko sits ten kilometres from central Nikko, beside the Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park that once welcomed three generations of the imperial family. The hotel works from the same instinct: every one of its 24 suites draws its own private source hot spring, so the ritual of soaking after a day among Nikko's rivers and mountains happens behind a closed door rather than in a shared bathhouse, something few hotels this size can offer. Suites range from the ground-floor Stylish Suite up to the Fufu Luxury Premium Suite, a 140 square metre room with an open-air bath large enough for a family of four, while the Luxury Suite category alone runs to 818 square feet. Dinner happens at Restaurant Setchu, where Kaiseki courses built around Japan's and the world's most prized delicacies sit beside a teppanyaki counter, Kou, inside the same dining room. The practical side is handled without fuss: round-the-clock reception, English-speaking staff, concierge and luggage storage, free Wi-Fi, and free parking for anyone arriving by car. Check-in runs from 3pm and check-out at 11am, and international guests should have a passport ready at registration, as Japanese law requires. This suits a couple wanting a slow, private soak and a serious kaiseki dinner over a packed itinerary or a busy lobby; it will read as too quiet for anyone chasing nightlife or wanting to walk straight into town, given the ten-kilometre run to the centre. What sets it apart is simple: a private hot spring in every one of only 24 rooms, in a hotel that never feels like it is sharing the view. Every one of Fufu Nikko's 24 suites has its own private source hot spring, ten kilometres from central Nikko beside the old Imperial Villa park. Dinner runs to Kaiseki or teppanyaki at Restaurant Setchu. It suits a couple's quiet retreat, not a base for evenings in town.

Past the entrance, classical music leads guests to Fufu Lounge, where a flickering fire and deep sofas set the scene for an afternoon tea exclusive to this resort. The lounge also serves pre-dinner champagne, evening whisky and morning tea, built around a house-blended yellow-flower tea and original cocktails.
