THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Bulgari Hotel Tokyo
Opened on 4 April 2023 across the fortieth to forty-fifth floors of Tokyo Midtown Yaesu, the ultra-skyscraper Mitsui Fudosan built into the Yaesu 2-Chome North District beside Tokyo Station's red brick facade, Bulgari Hotel Tokyo is the Italian jeweller's first property in Japan and the eighth in its global collection, following Milan (2004), Bali (2006), London (2012), Dubai (2017), Beijing (2017), Shanghai (2020) and Paris (2021). The views run from the Imperial Palace Gardens to Mount Fuji on a clear day, with the towers of Nihombashi and Marunouchi below and Ginza a short walk east. Milan-based architectural studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, responsible for the look of every Bulgari hotel since that first Milan property, designed both the public rooms and the 98 rooms and suites. The hotel operates under Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, the joint venture between Bulgari and Marriott International, with Bulgari Group chief executive Jean-Christophe Babin positioning it as the brand's flagship in Asia. The interiors keep the practice's usual palette of dark wood, bronze and marble, with the octagonal motif borrowed from Bulgari's Serpenti and B.zero1 jewellery lines worked into the lobby ceiling and the room hardware. Food runs through Il Ristorante, the Michelin-starred outpost of chef Niko Romito, whose main kitchen is the three-Michelin-starred Reale in Abruzzo, and Sushi Hōseki, an eight-seat counter serving omakase in a room that looks onto a small garden. The Bulgari Bar and the adjoining Bulgari Dolci pastry counter open off the fortieth-floor lobby, while the rooftop bar and terrace gardens on the forty-fifth floor face directly onto Tokyo Station. The spa runs to 1,000 square metres with nine treatment rooms and a 25-metre indoor pool, and the largest of the suites, the 400-square-metre Bulgari Suite, has its own dining room. This is a hotel built for people who already know Tokyo, arriving through an unmarked corridor at street level and a dedicated lift straight to the fortieth floor, the city dropping away instead of announcing itself. It reads more Milanese than Japanese in its instincts, glass and bronze and marquetry over shoji screens and tatami, and it makes no attempt to soften that. What it does well is proximity: five minutes from the Shinkansen platforms at Tokyo Station, dinner at Il Ristorante or the sushi counter without leaving the building, the district's towers filling every window. It suits travellers whose relationship with the city runs through Marunouchi's boardrooms as much as its side streets, who want arrival, transfer and a late dinner solved with minimum friction. You should not come here for a ryokan's quiet or a garden to disappear into; there is no ground floor, no engawa, no sense of a building settling into a landscape, because the hotel never touches the ground. You should not come if a jewellery house's initials on the bathrobe strike you as more corporate than covetable. You should come for the fortieth-floor arrival, the Niko Romito kitchen, and a bed within walking distance of the bullet train, in a city where that level of central convenience and finish together is rare enough to justify the address on its own. The short version: A 98-room Italian hotel on the fortieth to forty-fifth floors of Tokyo Midtown Yaesu, opened April 2023, designed by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, built around Niko Romito's kitchen, an eight-seat sushi counter, and a rooftop terrace facing Tokyo Station.
