THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Tokyo Station Hotel
Step off the Shinkansen at Tokyo Station and the hotel is already there, built directly into the Marunouchi side of the building itself, a red-brick landmark that has taken guests since 1915 and reopened in 2012 after a full restoration that kept its status as a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. That address is not decoration: staff meet arriving guests from Narita on the platform, and the walk from train to room lobby happens without ever stepping outside. The hotel keeps to just 150 rooms across three floors, part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, so the scale stays closer to a private house than a convention tower; anyone hoping for sweeping skyline views from a high floor should look elsewhere. Ten restaurants and bars cover the range from Blanc Rouge's French tasting menus to Edomae sushi at Asanogawa and Cantonese cooking built around seasonal vegetables, so a week of dinners never has to leave the building. A spa, sauna, and gym sit downstairs, though the spa is closed to guests under 18 and the public bathing facilities are off-limits to anyone with tattoos, both worth knowing before booking a family trip. Rooms keep bathrobes, minibars, and slippers as standard, with the exact layout depending on category. This suits travelers who want Tokyo's train network at their door and don't mind a morning walk through a working station concourse rather than a quiet side street; it suits less anyone chasing modern architecture or a resort-sized pool. What nobody else in the city can claim is the building: a working train station that is also a listed cultural property, receiving guests over a century after it first did. The Tokyo Station Hotel is built into Tokyo Station itself, a restored Important Cultural Property that has taken guests since 1915. Ten restaurants, a spa, and 150 rooms fill just three floors, trading skyline views for an address no other Tokyo hotel can claim.
