THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo
The Shangri-La sits directly above Tokyo Station, inside the Marunouchi Trust Tower, close enough that guests can reach the lobby from the station in about a minute. That is the one thing few luxury addresses in this city can claim: not nearby, but on top of the terminal itself. The Imperial Palace, Ginza, Otemachi, and Nihonbashi are all within a ten-minute walk, so getting anywhere central starts with walking rather than hailing a taxi. The 200 rooms run larger than most in the city, from 538-square-foot Deluxe rooms with garden or city views to 732-square-foot Premier rooms and suites, each with a private bathroom, minibar, and a desk built for actual work. Suite and Horizon Club guests get their own 37th-floor lounge with panoramic views and a dedicated concierge team, useful when a meeting runs long and dinner reservations need rearranging. Downstairs there is a 20-meter indoor pool, a spa with sauna and steam room, a 24-hour gym, and two restaurants plus a lobby lounge for the hours in between. Staff move easily between Japanese, English, Chinese, French, Italian, and Korean, which matters more than it should when you are jet-lagged and negotiating a late checkout. Families travelling with children under six get buffet breakfast included at the All Day Dining restaurant, up to two per paying adult. This is not the hotel for anyone chasing a ryokan's quiet or a neighbourhood's grit; it is built for people whose day starts and ends near a train platform and who would rather not think about logistics. What it offers instead is near-frictionless access to the center of the city, from a room high enough to forget the crowds below. Shangri-La Tokyo sits directly above Tokyo Station, a rare position among the city's luxury hotels, with 200 rooms, a 37th-floor Horizon Club lounge, and a 20-meter pool. It suits travelers who value proximity over atmosphere, not those wanting a quiet neighborhood stay.

All 200 rooms carry a contemporary Asian design and look out over either Tokyo Bay or the Marunouchi cityscape. Each is fitted with a 42-inch flat-screen TV, high-speed internet and an in-room safe, giving guests a consistently spacious, view-driven base a short walk from Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace.
