THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, a Luxury Collection Hotel
The hotel occupies the top seven floors, the 30th to the 36th, of a 36-storey tower built on the site of the former Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka, replaced in 2016 by the Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho development in which the hotel now sits alongside offices and long-term residences. The address is 1-2 Kioicho, in Chiyoda-ku, a district that held the estates of the Kii, Owari and Ii families during the Edo period and that still reads as one of the greener, quieter corners of central Tokyo, a short walk from the Imperial Palace and from the Akasaka Prince Classic House, the one structure left standing from the site's earlier life. The 250 rooms, including 11 suites, were fitted out by Rockwell Group, the firm founded by David Rockwell, working through its European studio on this commission, and the hotel is run by Prince Hotels under Marriott's Luxury Collection banner, the first property of that brand to open in the city. The 36th-floor lobby, named the Sky Gallery Lounge Levita, is anchored by a lit glass installation built on the idea of a waterfall, made by the Yokohama artist Mari Noguchi and framed by a window some thirty feet high that lines up, on a clear evening, with Tokyo Tower. Guest rooms follow the same logic of a room suspended above the city: Simmons beds built to a "levitation" concept face oversized windows with deep cushioned benches, bathrooms are marble with rainforest showerheads, and the higher categories add a freestanding tub angled toward the skyline. Food runs through Washoku Souten for Japanese cuisine, built around what the kitchen calls "ice," the idea that an ingredient reaches the table at its freshest, alongside a dedicated sushi counter, a teppanyaki room, and a sake bar with a list weighted toward small regional producers over the big-name breweries. The 34th-floor Club Lounge, open to Club Floor, Grand Deluxe and suite guests, adds its own run of the view along with a Swiss-inflected spa, an indoor pool, and a heated public bath, the last a small nod to onsen culture the hotel otherwise leaves outside its glass walls. Staying here feels less like a retreat from Tokyo than an unusually comfortable observation deck onto it: every room, every restaurant, the pool, even the gym, is built around the same premise, that the city outside is the real amenity and the interiors exist to frame it without competing with it. That suits business travellers who want proximity to Nagatacho and Akasaka without sacrificing design, and short-stay couples who want a hotel that photographs and functions well without asking them to do any cultural performance to earn it. It is not an intimate house in the way a converted machiya or a small ryokan is; it announces itself as a skyscraper hotel inside a mixed-use complex, and does that job with more discipline than most of its category. You should not come if you want a hotel with a history stretching back further than 2016, or if the idea of sharing your building with offices and long-term residences doesn't appeal, both of which surround the hotel within Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho and are hard to fully forget once you know they're there. The Club Lounge, at peak breakfast hours, can feel closer to a well-run airport lounge with better views than to a private retreat. You should come for the view itself, which is the organising principle of the entire building and not a line applied after the fact, and for a level of service consistency that Prince Hotels has spent decades building across its portfolio and applies here without visible strain. The short version: A 250-room skyscraper hotel on the top seven floors of Tokyo Garden Terrace Kioicho, opened in 2016 with interiors by Rockwell Group, built around uninterrupted city views from every room, restaurant, and the 34th-floor Club Lounge.
