Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park
Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park stands seven storeys above Tomigaya, the quiet, coffee-shop-dense pocket of Shibuya known locally as Oku-shibu, directly across the street from the tree line of Yoyogi Park itself. The hotel opened on the 1st of September 2023, the third property from Trunk co., ltd, following the brand's 2017 debut on Cat Street in Jingumae and the 2019 launch of Trunk House. Across 1,499 square metres, the building holds 25 rooms, including 5 suites, with the Owner's Suite and its 95 square metre terrace occupying the entire penthouse floor. Keiji Ashizawa, the Tokyo architect behind every Trunk property since the brand's founding, oversaw the architecture and interiors, working for the first time with the Copenhagen studio Norm Architects. The whole project answers to Yoshitaka Nojiri, a Shibuya native who built his first fortune in the wedding industry through his company Take and Give Needs before turning to hotels, and who conceived Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park as a return to the neighbourhood where he grew up. Inside, the palette runs to raw concrete, light oak and copper, the last of these traced back to the wood-fired pizza oven that anchors the ground-floor restaurant and repeated in the entrance facade and the bespoke lighting throughout. Furniture was produced with Karimoku and the Ariake Collection, carpets were woven with Hotta Carpet to patterns drawn from traditional Japanese architecture, and the copper wall lamps were made with the plate artist Eiko Miki, with smaller pendant lights supplied by Kojima Shoten in Kyoto. On the ground floor, Pizzeria e Trattoria L'Ombelico seats 67 across indoor and open-air, dog-friendly tables, its menu overseen by the chef behind Trattoria e Pizzeria L'Arte in Sangenjaya, its Neapolitan pizzas fired in an oven imported from Italy. The pool floor, open from seven in the morning to midnight, centres on a heated 12-metre infinity pool and jacuzzi facing the park, with a 28-seat lounge and oyster bar that turns, after dark, into a firepit-lit room looking out over the Tokyo skyline. Turndown arrives with Japanese-style sleepwear, herbal tea, and skincare from the Japanese label Damdam. The overall effect is closer to a private residence than a hotel in the conventional sense, helped by a lobby accessible only with a room key and a low-decibel, spa-adjacent hush that holds even when the restaurant downstairs is at capacity. Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park suits the kind of guest who wants Tokyo without the churn of Shibuya Crossing five minutes away, who will use the pool at odd hours and take breakfast slowly, and who cares more about the provenance of a chair than the size of a lobby chandelier. It is not a hotel that performs luxury at you. The restraint, Japanese and Scandinavian in roughly equal measure, rewards a guest who actually looks at the joinery, not one scrolling past it for a photo. You should not come if you want a grand hotel experience, full concierge theatre, or a location inside the crush of central Shibuya; Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park is a walk from the station and built for calm over spectacle, and with 25 rooms there is no scale to hide in if you want anonymity in a crowd. You should come for the reverse: a small, considered building at the edge of one of Tokyo's great parks, run by people who have spent close to a decade refining one idea of what a Japanese boutique hotel should look like, and a restaurant and pool bar good enough that Tomigaya locals use them without ever booking a room. The short version: A 25-room hotel on the edge of Yoyogi Park in Tomigaya, built in 2023 by Keiji Ashizawa and Norm Architects for founder Yoshitaka Nojiri, with a rooftop infinity pool, an Italian restaurant known across Shibuya, and interiors that treat restraint as the main event.
