THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
THE KAHALA Hotel & Resort YOKOHAMA
THE KAHALA Hotel & Resort YOKOHAMA sits two kilometres from the city centre, close enough to the port that Deluxe Corner rooms with ocean views look straight out over the water; Harbour View rooms on the same floors face the city instead. The hotel carries the name of Honolulu's Kahala, a resort that opened in 1964 and drew royal families, presidents and film stars to Oahu; the Yokohama property opened in September 2020 as the brand's only address outside Hawaii. Across 146 rooms on 14 floors, the largest suite runs more than double the footprint of a standard room, and every category comes with a refrigerator and minibar as standard. The hotel keeps a full-service spa with reservation-only treatments, an indoor pool open from six in the morning to ten at night, a sauna, and two restaurants, including the Italian kitchen at OZIO. Staff speak English, German, French, Russian and Chinese, useful given the passport paperwork Japan requires at check-in. This suits a couple marking an occasion who want a proper spa afternoon and dinner without leaving the building, or someone running a meeting who needs 153 square metres of conference space and a 24-hour gym in the same address. It reads as excessive for anyone who wants to be out walking Yokohama's streets rather than above them, and the pool, spa and breakfast all carry separate charges rather than sitting bundled into the room rate. What the harbourfront chains nearby cannot offer is that Hawaiian pedigree, a resort culture built over sixty years, transplanted wholesale onto a Japanese port skyline. THE KAHALA Hotel & Resort YOKOHAMA is the only address outside Hawaii carrying the name of Honolulu's 1964 resort, two kilometres from the port. It suits a couple wanting a spa afternoon and dinner without leaving the building, less so anyone who wants to be out walking the streets.
