THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Pug Seal Oaxaca
Walk up the staircase at Pug Seal Oaxaca and you're stepping over a fertility symbol carved by artist Sabino Guisú, while brass inlays worked with Zapotec motifs by Manuel Lozano line the walls around you, a collaboration built into a house whose origins trace to the early nineteenth century and which only opened as a hotel in 2020. That kind of site-specific art installation, threaded through a converted colonial-era home, is not something other twenty-room properties in Oaxaca's historic center can claim. The location does the rest of the work: guests are a ten-minute walk from Santo Domingo Square and the Zócalo, close enough to the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Rufino Tamayo Museum that a night out doesn't require a car, and free bicycles sit ready for anyone who'd rather cover the cobblestones under their own power. Each of the twenty rooms carries its own design language rather than a repeated template, with breakfast, concierge service, laundry and dry cleaning, and free Wi-Fi handled without fuss, and an airport transfer arranged for a separate charge if a car feels easier than a taxi after a flight. There is no elevator, so anyone with heavy luggage or mobility concerns should ask about room placement before booking, and travelers chasing a pool or a spa circuit will want to look elsewhere; this is a house built around art, history and a central address, not resort amenities. A deposit of 3,000 pesos per room, per stay, is standard here. What stays with you afterward isn't the room count. It's the staircase. Twenty rooms, no elevator, and a staircase carved as a fertility symbol beneath Zapotec brass inlay, in a colonial house turned hotel in Oaxaca's historic center. A ten-minute walk covers Santo Domingo Square and the Zócalo. Bring good shoes, not a rolling suitcase you can't carry.
