THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Bo
At Bo in San Cristobal de las Casas, fire lights up the restaurant and lobby after dark, a mirror of water sits at the entrance, another ripples in the middle of the garden, and a fountain runs at the base of the building, all built around the four elements of local tradition: fire, water, wind and earth. Twenty-two rooms sit across two floors inside gardens planted with monalisas, begonias, bougainvillea, ferns and elephant ears, a pine tree, and a magnolia shading the restaurant terrace. This suits someone who wants boutique detail, Venetian mosaic bathrooms, Chiapanecan textiles, a two-level Master Suite with a terrace facing Cerro de Huitepec, without losing a working business center, conference hall and event facilities for a stay that mixes rest with meetings. It suits a traveller drawn to Cocina Bo, chef Hugo Olivera's contemporary Mexican menu built from regional produce, and to a library and bicycle rental for slower afternoons. It will not suit anyone travelling with a pet, since the property does not allow them, or anyone chasing a large pool, since only the Premium Suite has one, private and attached to the room. No comparable design hotel in the city gathers water at the door, fire after dark, wind through the lobby's large windows and gardens holding it all together in one place at this scale. Staff work in English and Spanish, the front desk runs around the clock, and airport transfer can be arranged for a fee. With only 22 rooms, the gardens rarely feel crowded, whatever the season brings to San Cristobal. Bo builds its four elements at once: fire after dark, water at the entrance, wind through big windows, earth holding 22 rooms across two floors. It suits garden lovers and business groups, less so pet owners or anyone wanting a full pool.
