THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Eilert Smith Hotel
Nordbøgata 8 was a machine-parts warehouse in 1937, its ground floor stacked with tractor components and heaters for Rogaland Felleskjøp. It took until 2019 for Signe Anne and Kristoffer Stensrud to turn the building into an eleven-room hotel, keeping architect Eilert Smith's curved lines and clock tower while Pål Trodahl added two floors in travertine, brass and wood. The result reads as history rather than theme: original geometry, functionalist windows, a compact scale that never pretends to be a chain hotel. What sets it apart from Stavanger's other boutique addresses is what happens on the ground floor, where chef Sven Erik Renaa runs RE-NAA, a three-Michelin-star restaurant with an open kitchen and a menu built from local seafood, vegetables and wild game. Guests get the city on one side and the fjord on the other, a five-minute walk from Øvre Holmegate and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. Rooms carry minibars, blackout blinds and rainfall showers; the top-floor Eilert's Residence adds a private terrace, a spiral staircase and 250 square metres for those marking an occasion. Someone chasing a full-service resort or a lively bar scene will find this too quiet: the hotel prefers calm, discourages parties, and keeps to eleven or twelve rooms with a single restaurant. Someone who wants a serious meal without leaving the building, and a hotel with a documented past rather than a manufactured story, will find both here. Self-parking runs 500 kroner a day, and pets aren't allowed. What lingers is the ground floor, where a three-Michelin-star kitchen sits under the same roof as the room key. A 1937 machine-parts warehouse turned eleven-room hotel in central Stavanger, with the three-Michelin-star RE-NAA on its ground floor. Rooms keep original geometry and travertine details; the penthouse Eilert's Residence adds a private terrace and spiral staircase. Quiet by design, pet-free, and not for anyone wanting a lively bar scene.
