THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hôtel-Restaurant Valrose
The train that opened this valley to travelers in the early 1900s still stops close enough to Hôtel-Restaurant Valrose that guests without a car can walk in from the platform, past the miniature station and into a village of century-old chalets. The hotel was founded in 1904 by the Cottier family, who ran it as Rougemont's institution for more than a hundred years before Ermes Elsener took over direction in 2024. It sits at the entrance to the village, built in fir wood and granite, with twelve rooms. Downstairs is what separates Valrose from any chalet its size: chef Benoît Carcenat, Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2015, runs a restaurant carrying two Michelin stars and the title of Switzerland's chef of the year. Breakfast is a local buffet on the terrace facing Mont Rübli in summer or by the Bar Lounge fire in winter, with hot chocolate or tea and a house pastry offered on arrival. Dogs are welcome, free outdoor parking includes an EV charging point, and laundry and ironing are handled for longer stays. Wheelchair access reaches the restaurant, and staff work across French, English and Spanish. This suits a couple who want a genuine reason to eat well in the mountains, or anyone wanting Gstaad's slopes and Château-d'Oex's hot-air balloons without staying inside Gstaad. It will not suit travelers after a large resort, a pool, or anonymity: twelve rooms means the kitchen and the owners both know who is at the table. Check-in runs from 16:00, check-out to 11:00. Evening light over Rougemont turns the color that gave the village its name, and by then the Valrose dining room is where the day settles. Founded in 1904 and still Rougemont's institution, this twelve-room chalet at the village entrance hides a restaurant with two Michelin stars under chef Benoît Carcenat. Dogs, EV charging, and a fire-lit breakfast room come standard; a pool and anonymity do not.
