THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Old England Manor
The Gothic clock tower of The Old England Manor rises through the mist that gathers most mornings over Qingjing, its bells marking the hour for the village below long before guests wake to a view of Taiwan's Central Mountain Range. Built by hand over years by the Luo family, who traveled to Europe to select furniture and planted the grounds themselves, this 19-room hotel in Ren-ai commits to a specific idea: half-timbered walls, stone-mullioned rose windows, and a Tudor silhouette that has no rival at this elevation. The nine suites, named for musical forms, run from a 33-square-metre suite up to two-bedroom suites of 150 to 165 square metres, each with a private bar, LCD television and a Focal Utopia sound system for anyone who wants their evening scored properly. Vergino Restaurant serves lunch built on local, in-season produce, an English afternoon tea of pastries, scones and fine tea, and a candlelit multi-course dinner. Upstairs in the clock tower, a whisky bar and a cigar room look out over the peaks, while the ground floor keeps a garden, terrace, free Wi-Fi, and staff who speak English and Mandarin. Families are welcome, though the antique furnishings and stairs call for supervision of small children; pets are not allowed. Late checkout past 11:30am carries a fee of 2,500 TWD, and since 2025 Taiwan's waste-reduction rules mean the hotel no longer stocks disposable toiletries, so guests should pack their own. This is a place for travellers drawn to one fully committed idea rather than a view alone, and less suited to anyone wanting minimalism or a fast overnight near an airport. A 19-room Tudor manor in the misty peaks above Ren-ai, hand-built by the Luo family with furniture brought from Europe. Nine musically named suites, a seasonal restaurant, and a clock-tower whisky bar and cigar room set it apart.

Your taste already has an address

The estate's grounds were landscaped and planted by the founder himself during the property's long, hands-on construction. Set high in Cingjing's misty peaks, the garden and terrace give guests a quiet outdoor retreat away from the guest rooms, framed by the surrounding mountains and shifting mountain light.
The property is entirely smoke-free.
Staff speak Chinese and English.
Early check-in or late check-out can be arranged for an additional fee.
