THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara
Qasr Al Sarab sits inside the Liwa Oasis, on the edge of the Empty Quarter, the largest uninterrupted sand desert on earth, roughly 194 kilometers from Abu Dhabi International Airport, so the final stretch of the drive is nothing but dunes. Built in 2009 and run by Anantara across 206 rooms spread over two low floors, it reads less like a desert-themed hotel on a city's outskirts and more like an actual outpost in the sand, colored to match the Rub al Khali around it. Dinner can be taken in a Bedouin-style tent set among the dunes, a detail most desert resorts elsewhere cannot offer, and days can be filled with camel treks, falconry, sand surfing, and 4x4 or quad safaris arranged through the hotel, alongside archery, cycling, and hiking closer to the property. Two pools, a spa with sauna and steam room, and yoga cover the quieter hours, and the resort carries Green Growth 2050 and Hotel Sustainability Basics certification. Families are looked after properly, with a kids club, playroom, children's pool, and babysitting on request, while couples get bathrobes, deep bathtubs, and a bridal suite if the occasion calls for it. Staff between them cover languages from Arabic to Turkish, useful given how far this sits from anywhere else. This suits travelers who want the desert itself as the destination, not a backdrop glimpsed from a lobby bar; it will frustrate anyone hoping to combine the stay with city sightseeing, since Abu Dhabi's landmarks are a real drive away, not a taxi ride. What lingers afterward is the quiet: no traffic, no neighboring towers, just sand running to the horizon in every direction, deep inside the Empty Quarter. A genuine outpost in the Empty Quarter's dunes rather than a desert-themed hotel near a city, with Bedouin-tent dinners among the sand and camel treks, falconry, and 4x4 safaris arranged on-site. It suits travelers chasing real desert immersion, not those wanting Abu Dhabi's sights a short taxi ride away.

Set within the Liwa Desert in the Empty Quarter, the resort arranges sand surfing, camel treks, falconry and 4x4 or quad desert safaris directly from the property. These excursions let guests experience indigenous Bedouin desert culture firsthand, combining adventure activities with the surrounding dunes just outside the resort's doors.
