THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Burj Al Arab Jumeirah Hotel
Every one of the 202 suites at Burj Al Arab spans two floors, reached by a private lift landing inside your own duplex, a layout no other hotel on this shoreline offers. The building itself stands apart too: it occupies its own artificial island off Jumeirah Beach Road, linked to Dubai by a private bridge, its sail-shaped silhouette rising 27 storeys since 1999. Inside, gold leaf and hand-cut marble cover the public spaces, and dinner at Al Muntaha, the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant on the 27th floor, is booked as an occasion rather than a meal. Guests move between a private beach, four pools, and the Sal beach club, or send children to the kids' club and playground while they use the spa's sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms. Rooms bring in-room jacuzzis, DVD players, and bathrobes as standard, along with round-the-clock room service and turndown care. None of this comes without ceremony or cost: a nightly deposit of 2,000 AED per guest applies, breakfast runs extra at 515 AED per person, and the hotel's own restoration programme means parts of the decor are being refreshed in stages, so it is worth asking what is currently open before booking for a specific outlook. Families travelling with more than two people should note that suites, not standard rooms, are the only configuration on offer, and extra beds carry a nightly fee. This suits travellers who want the theatre of arrival, the bridge crossing, the atrium, the gold, and who do not flinch at fees layered onto the room rate. It does not suit anyone hoping to slip in quietly or stretch a modest budget across a week. What lingers afterward is not the height of the building but the fact that you never left your suite's second floor to reach the bed. Every suite at Burj Al Arab is a duplex on its own artificial island, from gold-leafed corridors to a Michelin-starred restaurant on the 27th floor. It rewards travellers who want ceremony, not those counting dirhams on extras.

Your taste already has an address

The hotel's helipad, an architectural landmark in its own right, has staged a tennis exhibition between Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, a golf drive by Tiger Woods, and a stunt kite-surf jump, reflecting the building's reputation as a stage for headline-making events on its artificial island setting.
