THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Refinery Hotel
Refinery Hotel occupies the 1912 Colony Arcade in New York's Garment District, two blocks from Bryant Park, a former hat factory and Prohibition-era tea room that reopened as a 197-room hotel in 2014. Its twelve floors keep that industrial memory intact: 12-foot ceilings, distressed hardwood floors and large windows, marble bathrooms finished in mosaic tile and copper, Rhône Le Bois Maison bath products, a 42-inch LCD TV and a minibar stocked with local Hudson whiskey. What sets it apart from the rest of Midtown is Refinery Rooftop, open year-round under a retractable glass roof with a clear view of the Empire State Building, serving a full lunch menu by day and cocktails built on natural ingredients by night. Downstairs, Parker & Quinn serves ribeye and soft-shell crabs, and Winnie's, the lobby bar, keeps a running schedule of live jazz. Staff work across eight languages, the hotel offers dry cleaning and laundry, and an elevator plus ADA-compliant routes reach all twelve floors. This suits someone who wants walking distance to Fifth Avenue shopping and the theater district without staying inside either, and who treats a hat-factory pedigree as a feature rather than a decorating theme. It works less well for anyone after resort-scale quiet: the rooftop and Winnie's jazz sets give the building a pulse most nights, check-in requires guests to be 21, and cash is not accepted at the desk. Dogs and cats stay free of charge, though a $200 deposit applies per stay. The building has kept a bar or restaurant running since 1914, so the crowd at Refinery Rooftop most nights is less trend than habit. Two blocks from Bryant Park, Refinery Hotel fills a 1912 hat factory with 197 rooms and a retractable-roof rooftop bar that keeps the Empire State Building in view year-round. Winnie's hosts live jazz, dogs and cats stay free, and check-in requires guests to be 21.
