THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Villa La Madonna
In the yoga studio at Villa La Madonna, the day opens with sun salutations before the Bormida Valley has properly woken up; by evening the same guests are on the terrace for the daily aperitivo, cocktails timed to the sunset. In between sits a working vineyard, the one thing that separates this sixteen-room villa in Monastero Bormida from the countryside hotels around it. A tractor ride takes guests out to grape farmer Vittorio's land for a lesson in fermentation and a lunch built around his own Barbera, and in truffle season the same tractor carries them into the hills with a hunter and trained dogs, returning for a three-course lunch of whatever was found, paired with local wine. There's a cooking class at the chef's table for hands-on pasta, tagliolini and agnolotti made and eaten the same afternoon, and hiking and cycling paths that start right at the door, with bikes and picnic baskets arranged on request. The pool and a massage room cover the slower hours, the restaurant and bar the evenings. Rooms come with air conditioning, heating, balconies or terraces and safes, and the property has wheelchair access, an EV charging point and pet-friendly rooms, backed by concierge, laundry, self-parking and an airport shuttle, plus a small business center for the rare working morning. This suits someone who wants real countryside without giving up a decent glass of wine, and who isn't bothered by being a fair distance from any city center. It is not for a traveler chasing nightlife or a quick turnaround between meetings. What stays with you is the rhythm: sun salutations, tractor rides into truffle country, and a glass raised at the end of it. Villa La Madonna, sixteen rooms in Piemonte's Bormida Valley, runs its own vineyard and sends guests out by tractor for truffle hunts and winemaker lunches. Yoga at sunrise, aperitivo at sunset, and a chef's table pasta class fill the days between.
