THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Amanyangyun
Walk past the lake at Amanyangyun and you reach a cluster of houses that look Ming and Qing in every joist and roof tile, because they are: thirteen of them, dismantled in Fuzhou and rebuilt here, brick by brick, inside a camphor forest the hotel let grow wild around them. This is Aman's fourth property in China, and the only one built on salvage rather than imitation, which is the thing no neighbouring five-star in Shanghai can claim. The city itself is 24 to 27 kilometres away, close enough for an afternoon at Jing An Temple or Taikang Road, far enough that the traffic and crowds stay someone else's problem. The 67 rooms and villas are generous by any Shanghai standard, the largest a villa that clears 10,000 square feet, and the Aman Spa, indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, and massage rooms are built for days with nowhere to be. Five separate dining venues, formal to alfresco, mean the rhythm of meals can change without ever leaving the grounds. Families get a kids' club and babysitting; those bringing work get a boardroom, a lecture hall, and a 200-seat banquet space. None of this suits a traveller who wants to be in the thick of the Bund by foot, or who resents a 3,000 CNY daily damage deposit at check-in. It suits someone who wants historic Jiangxi architecture and Shanghai's airports within reach of the same gate, and who would rather drive twenty minutes for silence than walk five for noise. What stays with you afterward isn't the spa or the villas, but the odd calm of rooms that were built two centuries ago in another province and now simply belong where they stand. Thirteen relocated Ming and Qing houses, a camphor forest, and Aman's fourth China address sit 24km outside Shanghai with five dining venues and a full spa. It rewards those who want history and quiet over city-centre convenience, deposit and distance included.

Amanyangyun's antique houses were not built on site but rescued: in 2002, roughly fifty Ming- and Qing-dynasty villas and ten thousand camphor trees were disassembled brick by ancient brick in Fuzhou, Jiangxi province, and transported 700 kilometres to Shanghai, where Aman completed their restoration from 2009 after a decade of work.
