THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Niwa
Hotel Niwa sits within walking distance of the Tokyo Imperial Palace and Yasukuni Shrine, close enough to Ochanomizu that an evening walk through the neighborhood feels like part of the stay rather than an errand. Built in 2009 and rising fifteen floors over 229 rooms, it runs on quiet, practical courtesy: a 24-hour front desk, concierge, and the kind of locked-after-hours entrance (2am to 5am, intercom to ring) that signals a hotel built for security rather than spectacle. What the hotel has that its neighbors don't is on the roof: a working apiary started in 2024 to pollinate the rooftop garden, its honey and herbs going into Hotel Niwa's own craft beer, brewed in flavors like wasabi and strawberry and sold nowhere else. Downstairs, the two restaurants, one Japanese, one French-leaning, face each other across a courtyard, a deliberate echo of the shoji-screen, washi-paper rooms upstairs where soft light replaces the glare more common in Tokyo's tower hotels. Rooms run from Standard doubles at 18 square meters to Premium twins with jacuzzis at 36, with a massage room, gym, and business center covering the rest of the itinerary. A woman traveling for meetings near the Imperial Palace will find the conference rooms and laundry service useful; someone wanting late-night bar-hopping will find the quiet, gated-after-midnight entrance less convenient. Breakfast costs extra if it isn't already bundled into the rate, four thousand yen a head. Check-in is 3pm, checkout 11am, ordinary hours for an unordinary roof. Hotel Niwa keeps a 24-hour front desk, a locked midnight entrance, and a rooftop apiary whose honey ends up in the hotel's own craft beer. Fifteen floors of shoji-screen rooms near the Imperial Palace suit travelers who want quiet and structure; it won't suit anyone chasing nightlife past 2am.
