THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
TRUNK Hotel Tokyo
In Shibuya, where Cat Street spills toward Omotesando Hills and Takeshita Street, fifteen rooms sit inside a boutique hotel that calls its whole operation "Socializing." Each guestroom is designed as a one-of-a-kind space, furnished with original items built from scratch, down to hangers made of recycled iron and pencils made from 93 percent reclaimed wood, so no two stays look quite the same. The hotel commits five million yen a year from its sales to local charities, a habit of giving most hotels never mention, let alone measure. Downstairs, a restaurant and bar/lounge carry the day into evening, a coffee shop handles the quick exits, and a barbecue area gives the terrace something to do besides look good. There is a concierge and 24-hour front desk, a doctor on call, massage services, free Wi-Fi throughout, and staff who speak English, Italian, German and French. Two meeting rooms cover small business gatherings. Rooms carry safes, minibars and flat-screen televisions, and bathrooms stock their own toiletries and hair dryers. Breakfast is cooked to order, served from 7 to 10:30 each morning for a fee. Travelers chasing uniform polish or families needing connecting rooms should look elsewhere: this is close quarters, built for someone within walking distance of Meiji Jingu Shrine and Yoyogi Park who wants a hotel with a point of view rather than a lobby full of marble. A 20,000 yen daily deposit covers incidentals, and passport details go on file at check-in, standard practice across Japan. What stays with you afterward is not the room count, it is the sense that someone designed every object in it on purpose. Fifteen one-of-a-kind rooms in Shibuya, each furnished with objects built from scratch down to the recycled-iron hangers, in a hotel that gives five million yen a year to charity. Close to Yoyogi Park and Omotesando Hills, it suits someone who wants design with intent, not a marble lobby.
