THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Ryumeikan Ochanomizu Honten
Three minutes on foot from Ochanomizu Station, Hotel Ryumeikan Ochanomizu Honten keeps just nine rooms, a number that has not grown since the property traces back to a ryokan founded in 1899 and rebuilt into its current form in 2014. The detail that separates it from the business hotels crowding Kanda is a handcrafted Shigaraki pottery bathtub, roughly 110 centimetres across, rough-surfaced by design and built for a long soak rather than a quick rinse. Rooms carry LARKOWL mattresses tuned to Tokyo's seasonal humidity, plus the small, specific comforts a traveler notices on a second visit: free in-room drinks, a CD and DVD player, a trouser press on request. A second-floor library lounge looks out over the ginkgo trees of Hongo Avenue, and breakfast, when ordered at least five days ahead, arrives as a sandwich set or a seaweed bento rather than a buffet. The onsite restaurant, 1899 Ochanomizu, has carried its own Michelin recognition. There is no gym, no pool, no scale of amenity that a convention traveler would recognize, and no children twelve and under are permitted on the property, so this is not a stop for families or anyone who wants a lobby full of activity. It suits a solo or paired traveler who wants Chiyoda's museums and the Imperial Palace within walking distance and a room that feels considered rather than templated. Self-parking is limited to three spaces and must be reserved. What stays with you afterward is less the room and more the bath. Nine rooms near Ochanomizu Station, a Shigaraki pottery bathtub built for soaking, and a library lounge over ginkgo-lined Hongo Avenue. No children twelve and under, no crowd, just a century-old ryokan rebuilt with quiet specifics in mind.
