THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
HOTEL CEN
Five minutes from Shin-Okubo station, in the dense grid of Tokyo's Koreatown, Hotel Cen opens onto a roofed terrace cafe where regulars order fruit tea or a craft beer before heading up to one of forty-four rooms. The hotel calls itself Japan's first diversity hotel, built on a brief that put an LGBTQ+ designer in charge of the concept and recruited staff through LGBTQ+ job networks; the result shows less in slogans than in details, like a front desk that stays staffed around the clock. Most rooms are standard doubles for two, with three deluxe doubles offering more floor space and a full double bed; all come with air conditioning, a safe, a kettle or coffee maker, a fridge, slippers and a hairdryer, modest but complete. Guests who want polish and marble lobbies should look elsewhere: this is a four-floor, no-frills building where the restaurant and bar handle the socialising and the rooms are for sleeping. What sets it apart from the area's many business hotels is the cafe itself, open from eight until ten at night, serving as a shared living room for guests who would otherwise retreat straight to their rooms after a day exploring Shinjuku Central Park or the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building nearby. Laundry, luggage storage and express check-in cover the practical side; contactless check-out means an early flight needs no conversation. It suits travellers who want a short walk to Shin-Okubo's food streets and a hotel that treats inclusivity as infrastructure rather than branding. It does not suit anyone chasing space, silence or a view. What lands, in the end, is the terrace roof: usable on wet days, which in this city is most of them. A roofed cafe terrace and a self-described diversity concept set Hotel Cen apart from Shin-Okubo's business hotels, five minutes from the station. Forty-four rooms are basic but complete; three deluxe doubles trade space for a view of nothing extra. It suits travellers after inclusivity and location over polish.
