THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
the b asakusa Tokyo
Four hundred metres from Sensoji Temple, close enough that the evening crowds and incense drift past the b asakusa's entrance, this 166-room Ishin property sits in the thick of Asakusa's lantern-lit streets, a three-minute walk from Tsukuba Express Asakusa Station and ten minutes from the subway. Hanayashiki amusement park is two hundred metres away, which explains the one feature that sets this hotel apart from the business hotels stacked around it: rooms built with bunk beds, sleeping up to five, designed for families or groups who want to split a room rather than book two. Standard rooms keep things simple with carpeted floors, a desk, hairdryer and fridge; the Superior Twin and Double add a little more floor space and a direct-dial phone. Everything runs on efficiency rather than ceremony, a 24-hour front desk handles late check-ins after the 3pm start, luggage storage covers early arrivals before the 11am checkout, and the on-site restaurant and buffet breakfast, 1,650 yen for adults and 1,100 yen for children, save a walk when the temple crowds are too much. Self-parking is available for 2,200 yen a day, wheelchair access and a lift are in place, and laundry and dry cleaning are handled on site. None of this suits travellers chasing quiet corridors or spa treatments, and the rooms won't surprise anyone who has stayed in a modern Japanese business hotel before. But for a family wanting Sensoji on foot and a bunk room instead of a second booking, it solves a real problem. Four hundred metres from Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, the b asakusa pairs 166 straightforward rooms with bunk-bed options built for families, plus a 24-hour front desk and on-site breakfast for days spent walking the temple crowds.
