THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Okura Tokyo
Walk into The Okura Tokyo's 37th-floor Club Lounge in the Prestige tower and the city splits in two: Tokyo Tower on one side, Skytree on the other, through glass that turns the room into a private perch above Toranomon. The hotel has run this corner of Minato since 1962, and it still operates as two distinct buildings under one name: the Okura Heritage, with its traditional Japanese design and art, and the Okura Prestige, 41 floors of glass and steel. That split identity is the thing few Tokyo hotels bother to maintain, most consolidate into a single brand voice, and it means guests choose their register, lacquered calm or modern height, rather than accepting whatever the hotel decided for them. Downstairs, Yamazato runs a sushi counter and a tea ceremony room instead of a generic breakfast buffet, and Toh-Ka-Lin and Nouvelle Epoque cover Chinese and French without leaning on the word fusion. The spa, sauna, steam room and both indoor and outdoor pools suit anyone planning a slow week between meetings at the business center or wandering to Toranomon Hills and Tokyo Midtown. Families with children 12 and under should know the gym and pool are off-limits to them, a rule the hotel enforces rather than suggests. Expect a facilities fee and an extra-bed charge if you're adding one, and a credit card held as deposit on arrival. What stays with you isn't the room count, 508 across both wings, but the sense that a hotel built in 1962 still knows exactly what kind of guest it wants, and doesn't apologize for saying so. Two wings, one hotel: traditional Heritage design and 41 modern Prestige floors, with a 37th-floor lounge framing Tokyo Tower and Skytree. Yamazato's sushi counter and tea ceremony room beat the usual breakfast buffet. Note: children 12 and under can't use the gym or pool.
