THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Ksar Char Bagh
The name translates as Palace of Four Gardens, and the Persian concept of paradise it references, a garden divided by four streams representing the rivers of the afterlife, explains the design logic of everything inside the walls. The property is in the Palmeraie, fifteen minutes northeast of the medina, set within 3.5 hectares of citrus orchards, fig trees, olive groves, and murmuring fountains that cross and recross the grounds in a pattern drawn from Moorish mythology. The Alhambra-style entrance courtyard, with its carved plasterwork and central reflecting pool, is one of the great first impressions in Moroccan hotel-making. The 15 suites are improbably generous, each with private garden, terrace, or pool, sparse contemporary furniture against deeply traditional architecture, fireplaces for cooler evenings, bespoke toiletries in hand-blown glass and silver bottles, and hand-carved silver door keys that are satisfying to use in a way that few hotel keys manage. The 34-metre pool, flanked by majestic palms with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains on the horizon, is at the centre of the property in every sense. The restaurant serves Moroccan and continental cuisine under the high windows of the lantern-lit dining room, drawing from the hotel's own kitchen garden. The spa treatments are administered in the vault beneath the hotel or in the open-air massage space behind the pool, and the billiards room, the library, the cigar selection, and the sitting rooms give the property the feel of a private residence with no other guests and several very attentive staff. This is a hotel where the ratio of land to guest makes the premise of Marrakech entirely different. Fifteen suites on 3.5 hectares means the gardens are genuinely quiet, the pool is rarely shared, and the Atlas view is yours in whichever direction you choose to face. The short version: Fifteen suites in a palace of four gardens in the Palmeraie, inspired by Persian mythology and Moorish architecture, with a 34-metre pool facing the Atlas Mountains and the most generous guest-to-space ratio in Marrakech.
