THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Elle Dimora Di Sicilia
Breakfast at Elle Dimora di Sicilia is served on a roof terrace that looks straight across at Catania's Roman amphitheater, locals call it the black colosseum, while the cathedral dome rises behind it. The table is set with precious linens and Sicilian serving pieces, granita, brioche col tuppo, ricotta cannoli and cakes made in the house kitchen. Below, on Piazza Stesicoro, the city goes about its morning within walking distance of the amphitheater and the Metropolitan Theater. This is a bed and breakfast with three suites, not a hotel with layers of staff, and the difference shows in the details: hand painted ceilings in shades of sky blue, a fireplace and stone furniture in the room named for Dionysus, terracotta floors fired five times to reach a honeyed gold. The owner runs the place herself, from the flowers on the breakfast table to the linen canopy over the bed. There is no elevator, which matters given there are only three rooms and no other floors listed, so anyone unsteady on stairs or travelling with heavy luggage should ask before booking. Pets are not allowed. What sets it apart from the more anonymous B&Bs nearby is that terrace view onto the amphitheater itself, unobstructed and close enough to feel like part of the room. Concierge, laundry and tour assistance are handled on request, and parking is available for a fee nearby. Guests who want personal, design-led nights in the old town, and who do not mind climbing stairs, will find the intimacy is the point rather than a limitation. Three suites, a roof terrace facing the Roman amphitheater, and a host who sets each table herself: this is a design-led base in central Catania, not a full-service hotel. No elevator, so it suits those after intimacy over space.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

The interiors of this Catania dimora were shaped by hand: antique Sicilian terracotta fired five times for a honeyed floor tone, custom brass desks, linen canopies and neoclassical plaster figures set alongside works by artist Sergio Fiorentino. The result is a considered mix of historic craftsmanship and contemporary design throughout the property.
