THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Palazzo Marletta
Palazzo Marletta occupies a slice of Piazza Duomo, the square where Catania's cathedral and the Elephant Fountain have anchored the city since the 1693 earthquake forced it to rebuild in black lava stone and white limestone. The building itself is the point: an eighteenth-century noble residence, later run for years as Albergo Bella Catania, now converted into a seven-room house hotel across three floors, protected as a historical and monumental structure under Italian heritage law. Each room carries its own name, Agrùmia, Angélia, Crìsma, Profùmia, Idìllia, Celéstia, Lìbria, and its own read on the same Baroque bones, so the address changes little from what Vincenzo Marletta's carvers cut into the black stone in 1696. Breakfast follows Sicilian tradition, built on quality regional products, and the staff, fluent in English, Spanish, Italian and French, will arrange a transfer to Fontanarossa airport, the central station, or the port at Ortigia, book a guarded parking spot for those who drove in, or point you toward the diving club or a walk through the Pescheria fish market. Pets are welcome, and a beach shuttle runs for guests who want the coast rather than the cathedral square. What it does not offer is scale: seven rooms across three floors means no anonymity in a crowded lobby, and anyone wanting a resort with room to spread out in numbers should look elsewhere. This suits someone who wants to wake up inside the history rather than look at it from a coach window, who would rather have seven rooms and one address on Piazza Duomo than seven hundred. Few hotels in Catania can claim the square itself as a view. Palazzo Marletta is a seven-room conversion of an eighteenth-century noble house on Piazza Duomo, protected as a historical monument. It suits travelers who want to sleep inside Catania's Baroque center rather than view it from a tour bus, not those wanting resort scale or anonymity.
