THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Orania.Berlin
Orania.Berlin occupies a heritage-listed building from 1912 on Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg, where a café once hosted concerts and cabarets under Oscar Barton, and where five nights a week a jazz pianist works through Erroll Garner or Thelonious Monk in the restaurant while dogs settle under the tables. Jennifer and Philipp Vogel, who opened the hotel in 2017, run all 41 rooms across five floors with a hand rather than a script: solid hardwood floors, Schramm mattresses, B&B Italia sofas, handwoven Luribaff carpets from Iran, and golden Enzo Catellani lights, no two rooms quite the same. That live music, curated since 2019 by pianist Matti Klein and free to anyone who wanders in off the street, is not something another boutique address offers; it turns the restaurant and Orania.Bar into a neighbourhood fixture rather than a hotel amenity. Dogs are welcome throughout, including the restaurant and lounge, and the courtyard rooms stay quiet if you want distance from the bar below. Someone wanting a hushed, anonymous stay or a pool and spa to disappear into should look elsewhere; this suits a traveller who wants Oranienplatz outside the door, Kreuzberg Museum and Kottbusser Tor within walking distance, and a hotel that feels lived-in rather than styled for photographs. There's a Technogym fitness room, a playroom and childcare for those travelling with kids, wheelchair access to the restaurant, and multilingual staff covering English, French, German and Spanish. Parking nearby costs 48 euros a day, off-site. What lingers afterward isn't the catalogue of Italian and Iranian furnishings but the sound of a piano drifting through a century-old building that never stopped being a place where Berlin comes to listen. Orania.Berlin fills a 1912 building on Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg, where a jazz pianist plays free five nights a week and dogs are welcome throughout, restaurant included. It suits those who want neighbourhood character over hushed anonymity, not travellers chasing a spa or quiet retreat.
