THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Wilmina Hotel
Breakfast at Wilmina happens in the library, under floor-to-ceiling windows lined with books that become a work-and-reading space again after two in the afternoon, inside a building that opened as a Berlin courthouse and women's prison in 1896 and stayed one for nearly ninety years before Grüntuch Ernst Architects reworked it into a hotel. The original cell doors are still on the guest floors, now opening onto bright rooms that look out over lushly landscaped courtyards and gardens instead of the narrow barred windows the cells once had. That preserved history, left visible rather than smoothed over, is the one thing this 44-room, five-floor, family-run property has that Berlin's other design hotels do not. Rooms range from a compact Cosy Queen to a larger Standard King with garden view, most with air conditioning, blackout blinds, safes and bathrobes, though exact size and bedding shift by category, so anyone booking for more than a night or two should check specifics. Communal spaces do the heavier lifting: a sauna, a small 24-hour gym, a billiard room, a rooftop pool left unheated in winter for ice baths, and a garden terrace above a new penthouse building. Lovis restaurant and bar and an in-house bakery cover meals on site, and the Charlottenburg S-Bahn is a six-minute walk. This suits someone drawn to a hotel with an actual past and unbothered by that past being part of the design; anyone wanting a purely decorative boutique stay, or an address closer to central Berlin, should look elsewhere. The hotel is GreenSign certified, does not accept cash, and charges extra for pets and additional beds. Wilmina occupies a former Berlin courthouse and women's prison, its original cell doors opening onto bright rooms around landscaped gardens. A sauna, rooftop pool, library and Lovis restaurant sit on site, six minutes from the Charlottenburg S-Bahn. It suits travellers wanting real history, not a manufactured concept.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Built in 1896 as a criminal court and adjoining women's prison, the building was later transformed by Grüntuch Ernst Architects into the hotel. Original cell doors remain in place behind newly opened, light-filled rooms, and the site is remembered as a place where members of the 'Rote Kapelle' resistance were once imprisoned.
Bicycle rental is offered for exploring the city
Pets are welcome for an additional charge
Garage and on-site parking are available
A library and billiard room are open to guests
