THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel
Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel sits in Grunewald, an upscale residential quarter of Berlin, inside a Renaissance-style palace built in 1911 and later redesigned room by room by the fashion and interior designer whose name it carries. It positions itself as an escape from the city's downtown hustle, and the layout backs that up: 53 rooms across three low floors, each individually furnished rather than templated, opening onto a landscaped garden and terrace used for cocktail receptions and summer weddings. The Library Suite takes the top floor of the main palace building under vaulted ceilings; the two-bedroom Kaiser Suite runs to roughly 200 square metres. There's an indoor pool, sauna and spa, two restaurants and 24-hour room service, plus a business centre with 450 square metres of meeting and event space for guests mixing work with the trip. It also doubles, unusually for a hotel this size, as a working film and photo set: the lobby, PHC Bar, Champagne Lounge and garden are used for editorial shoots and campaigns. This suits someone who wants private gardens, individually designed rooms and a sense of occasion over walking distance to CityCube Berlin or the Olympic Stadium nearby; it will frustrate anyone who expects breakfast included rather than a EUR29 charge, or an airport transfer that isn't EUR130 round trip. A nightly deposit of EUR50 per guest applies, pets travel for a fee, and check-in doesn't start until 3pm. What holds attention here isn't the spa or the suite sizes. It's a century-old palace garden doing double duty as a film set, in a city better known for concrete than for either. A 1911 Renaissance-style palace in Berlin's Grunewald district, individually furnished and still used as a working film and photo set. Fifty-three rooms, a garden for weddings, an indoor pool and spa, plus fees for breakfast and the airport shuttle. It suits quiet over convenience.

The Bibliothek is a wood-paneled library room lined with floor-to-ceiling oak cabinets, centred on an extensive oak table beneath a painted ceiling. The room now hosts intimate meetings, boardroom sessions and receptions, giving guests a warm, historic setting for gatherings within the palace rather than a generic function space.
