THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Schlosshotel Burg Schlitz
Twenty rooms inside a castle built by a count who spent decades filling his park with obelisks, grottoes and memorial stones to people he loved: that eccentric, personal touch still sets Schlosshotel Burg Schlitz apart from the tidier Relais & Chateaux properties around it. The hotel sits in Hohen Demzin, two kilometres outside the small town, inside the landscaped park itself, where alleys of old trees lead past the Nymph Fountain and the restored Karolinen Chapel toward views over the Malchiner See. Rooms and suites are individually furnished rather than uniform, from smaller classic doubles up to the 88-square-metre Blue Suite with its own view across the Mecklenburg countryside, and several rooms look out over the park or the forest rather than a car park. The Livingroom Spa is deliberately small, with a pool, sauna, steam bath and infrared sauna, plus an outdoor tub for bathing under open sky, and it runs first come, first served rather than by fixed appointment, so guests who want a treatment book ahead. A library, picnic and barbecue areas, a chapel, and pet-friendly policy round out a property built for slow days rather than checklists. This suits a couple wanting a genuinely quiet, history-soaked few nights, or anyone drawn to a hotel with a real, slightly odd story behind it. It does not suit travellers who want a full-service resort with reliable air conditioning schedules, city nightlife nearby, or a large pool complex. Extra beds run 90 euros a night and pets cost 25 euros per stay. Staff speak English, German and Spanish. What lingers is the park itself, walked in the evening, past monuments a nobleman raised for people he refused to forget. Twenty rooms in a Mecklenburg castle whose park is dotted with obelisks and grottoes a count built for people he loved. Individually furnished suites, a small spa with an outdoor tub, and quiet dominate over polish, so book the spa ahead and skip it if you need a big resort.

The hotel's gourmet restaurant takes its name, Wappensaal, from the coat-of-arms hall it occupies within the historic castle building. Alongside it sits the more relaxed Café-Brasserie Louise, giving guests a choice between a formal dinner setting steeped in the estate's history and a casual daytime spot.
A private spa evening with candlelight and sparkling wine can be booked for exclusive use of the sauna and steam bath.
An outdoor tub set in the grounds lets guests bathe beneath the open sky.
Suites and rooms are individually furnished with minibar and flatscreen TV.
