THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Schlosshotel Kronberg
On the terrace of Schlosshotel Kronberg, drinks arrive while golfers work the adjoining course below, a view that would suit a private estate more than a hotel listing. That is essentially what this is: a house built in 1893 as the country home of Victoria, Empress Frederick, the widowed daughter of Queen Victoria who was no longer welcome in Berlin, shaped by court architect Ernst Ihne and opened as a hotel only in 1954. That royal starting point is what separates this Small Luxury Hotels of the World member from other grand addresses near Frankfurt: four floors, 62 rooms, sitting a kilometer from Kronberg's own center, close enough to walk to Burg Kronberg, the Kronberg painters' museum and Hohemark. History drinkers gather at Frederick's Lounge & Bar, named for the empress's husband and stocked with more than fifty whiskies. Couples marry on the rotunda above the park or in the hotel's library, then move guests into salons sized from sixteen up to a hundred and twenty. Families get a playroom and babysitting, walkers and cyclists get trails and bike rental, and conference groups get their own hall and meeting rooms. Pets are welcome for an added fee and deposit. None of it suits someone hunting a glass tower with a skyline view, or a hotel that plays down its past; the indoor fireplaces and the nineteenth-century stonework are the point, not an inconvenience to design around. What lingers afterward is the plain fact behind the postcard: this house exists because an empress needed one final, independent home of her own, and built it here. Built in 1893 as the widowed Empress Frederick's private retreat and a hotel since 1954, Schlosshotel Kronberg still overlooks the golf course from its terrace and pours from fifty-plus whiskies at Frederick's Bar. It suits weddings, walkers and history-minded couples more than anyone chasing a modern skyline.
