THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Teiennoyado Sekitei
At Teiennoyado Sekitei, in the Miyahama hot-spring quarter of Hatsukaichi, each of the twelve rooms carries its own indoor hot tub, heated floors, and a private slice of the Japanese garden that wraps the hillside site, so guests can soak while looking out toward the Seto Inland Sea and Miyajima. The garden itself has weight beyond the brochure: in 2006 the American Journal of Japanese Gardening ranked it ninth in the country, a distinction few twelve-room properties anywhere can claim. This is not a hotel for group trips or late check-ins near the action; there's no city center convenience here, Hatsukaichi's center sits eleven kilometers off, and guests with tattoos should know the onsen's public bathing areas are off-limits to them. What it suits instead is a slower kind of visit, arriving by the hotel's free shuttle from JR Oonoura Station, or dropping bags at Anagomeshi-no-Ueno restaurant near Miyajimaguchi Station before a day on Miyajima Island and picking up another shuttle back. The sea is close enough to walk to, Setonaikai National Park and Miyahama Hot Spring are within ten minutes on foot, and Itsukushima Shrine and the Miyajima ferry terminal are a short drive away. Inside, rooms come with minibars, TVs, and toiletries, breakfast runs on local cuisine, and there's a massage room, a bar, and a garden view from wherever you're sitting. Check-in starts at three, checkout at eleven, and there's little reason to rush either. Twelve rooms, each with its own indoor hot tub and a private hot-spring garden view toward Miyajima, at a ryokan whose grounds once placed ninth among Japan's finest. It sits eleven kilometers from central Hatsukaichi, so budget time for the shuttle, and skip it if you have a tattoo.
