THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Ochiairo Murakami
Ochiairo Murakami sits ten kilometers from central Izu, a guesthouse of just sixteen rooms across two floors, built around a ryokan established in 1874 and registered as a tangible cultural property of Japan, fully renovated in 2019 so the thermal spring baths, indoor, outdoor, and sauna, feel current rather than restored-for-show. That combination, a genuine nineteenth-century bathhouse lineage paired with a 2019 rebuild, is not something the newer spa hotels along the coast can claim. Rooms come with garden or river views, some with open-air baths of their own, minibars, slippers, and toiletries laid out without fuss; a handful list occupancy for up to ten adults and six children, though the property itself only admits children over thirteen, which tells you who this is for: couples and small groups after a slow few days, not families with toddlers. Evenings run on set patterns, dinner at 17:30 or 19:30 by reservation, all-inclusive beverages, a dining room and a lounge with a fireplace for afterward. A shuttle meets guests at Shuzenji Station on a fixed schedule, useful if you are arriving by train rather than car, and airport transfer is available for a flat fee if you need door to door. Staff speak English, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Nepali, and Japanese, which matters more here than at hotels closer to the city, given the distance from central Izu. There is a library, a playroom for older children, a massage room, and a doctor on call, the kind of quiet infrastructure a place builds when it has been operating for a century and a half rather than a few seasons. It rewards patience more than spontaneity. A guesthouse built on a ryokan dating to 1874, still running its own thermal baths after a 2019 renovation, ten kilometers outside central Izu. Sixteen rooms, garden or river views, dinner reserved by the half hour. Children under thirteen aren't admitted, so it suits couples more than families.
