THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Setsu Niseko
Outside the window at Setsu Niseko, Kutchan's snowfields roll toward Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu, six kilometres from the town centre, and inside the apart-hotel the floors are heated against it, a small detail that matters more than it sounds after a day on the slopes. This is a 190-room property built for people who need space and a working kitchen, not just a bed: units run from a 441-square-foot studio with a dishwasher, microwave and kettle to a four-bedroom apartment measuring nearly 3,500 square feet, which makes it a genuine option for extended families or a group of friends splitting the cost of a ski week rather than a couple after a quiet weekend. What sets it apart from the other ski lodgings nearby is the dining lineup: five distinct restaurants under one roof, from AFURI's ramen and Luke's Alpine Club's chop-house cooking to méli mélo Yuki No Koe's European-inspired plates and a tempura and omakase counter run under the direction of Michelin chef Araki, so a week here does not mean eating the same hotel menu every night. Onsen access runs from 2pm to midnight, with private baths and spa treatments booked ahead through the front desk, and there is a gym, sauna, ski storage, ski passes and a shuttle to the lifts, plus a business centre and conference hall for anyone mixing meetings with the mountain. Solo travellers wanting a compact, intimate room should look elsewhere; anyone arriving with a full car and a long guest list will find the layout does the planning for them. Setsu Niseko pairs 190 heated-floor apartments, from a 441-square-foot studio to a four-bedroom unit near 3,500 square feet, with five distinct restaurants including a tempura counter run by Michelin chef Araki. Onsen access runs 2pm to midnight, with skiing, a gym and a shuttle to the lifts included.
