THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Numazu Club
Numazu Club sits behind a thatched Nagaya Gate in Senbon Matsubara, the four-century pine grove that runs between Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay in Shizuoka. The building started life in 1913 as a sukiya-style teahouse commissioned by tea master Zenbei Miwa; a villa wing by architect Akira Watanabe was added in 2006, and in 2015 the teahouse and gate were designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. That history is the one thing here that competitors along this coast cannot claim. The hotel keeps just eight rooms across two floors, a mix of futon-furnished Japanese rooms, Western rooms with wide balconies, and a maisonette blending both styles, all opening onto a private garden. There is no elevator, so guests who need step-free access should look elsewhere, and with only eight rooms and reservation-only lunch and dinner, this suits travelers planning ahead rather than arriving on a whim. Meals are built around Chinese cooking, overseen by Sichuan specialist Hirofumi Saito of Kamakura's Ichirin Hanare, using seafood from Suruga Bay and the Izu coast in changing seasonal courses; breakfast runs 8 to 10, with an approximate JPY 3,564 per-person charge when not included in the rate. The spa, tucked at the back of the villa, has indoor and outdoor baths plus two saunas. Staff speak English and Japanese, and the property is smoke-free throughout. Pets are not allowed, and international guests should have passports ready at check-in, a standard requirement across Japan. This is not a hotel for anyone chasing a big lobby or late-night amenities; it rewards guests who want a specific piece of Numazu history to themselves for a night or two. Behind a 1913 teahouse gate in Numazu's pine grove, eight rooms sit inside a building granted Tangible Cultural Property status in 2015. Dinner is Sichuan-inflected Chinese food from a Kamakura chef, booked in advance; there is no elevator. Good for travelers who plan ahead, not for a spontaneous overnight.
