Halekulani Okinawa sits on the Onna coastline, about eight kilometres from the city centre, within walking distance of Kariyushi Beach, Busena Beach and Mission Beach. Most guests here choose between the 360 rooms in the main tower and its shared indoor and outdoor pools, the kind of arrangement you'd find at any large resort on this coast. What you won't find elsewhere is the Cliff Villa with Private Pool, a single detached room category with its own plunge pool and 893 square feet to itself, set apart from the crowd at the main pools. That's the one thing worth building a trip around; everything else, while well done as a Leading Hotels of the World member, is what you'd expect from a property this size. Divers and snorkellers have a house club to work with, and there's a golf course within three kilometres for anyone who'd rather not see sand at all. A kids club and babysitting keep families out of each other's hair, which makes this a reasonable pick for a multigenerational trip, though anyone chasing quiet, adults-only mornings should look elsewhere. Two of the on-site restaurants keep irregular winter hours: Kingdom closes on Mondays through the season, and Shiroux drops dinner service on Wednesdays over the same months, worth checking before booking a table. One of the pools also shuts for winter, from November through March. Practical notes: parking costs 2,000 JPY a day, a 20,000 JPY daily deposit is taken at check-in, and passports get photocopied at the desk, as Japanese law requires of every lodging. Check-in runs from 3pm, check-out by noon. The pull here is that private-pool villa, tucked away from the main tower's 360 rooms; book it if seclusion matters more than proximity to the buffet, and skip it if you just want a room with a fridge and a view.
