THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Conrad Osaka
Conrad Osaka occupies the 33rd to 40th floors of Nakanoshima Festival Tower West, a glass tower that rises 200 metres above the narrow island where the Dojima and Tosabori rivers converge, in the Kita ward district that has served as Osaka's administrative and cultural spine since the Edo period. The hotel opened on 9 June 2017, the second Conrad in Japan after Tokyo and the first in the country's west, with 164 rooms and suites, none smaller than 50 square metres, reached by a dedicated bank of lifts that opens onto a mezzanine four storeys below the main lobby. The building was designed by Nikken Sekkei, the interiors by Yukio Hashimoto working with Nikken Space Design, a pairing that shows in the way light, rather than ornament, does most of the work. The lobby, on the 40th floor, is entered via a sweeping spiral staircase and framed by four storeys of glazing, with Kohei Nawa's "Fu/Rai," a pair of Wind God and Thunder God screens, positioned at the reception approach as the first of more than 380 artworks by roughly twenty artists distributed through the property. Rooms carry dark wood, black lacquer, circular soaking tubs and digital panels for lighting and curtains, alongside in-room espresso machines and a cast iron teapot for the traditional counterpoint. Four restaurants and bars cover the ground: Atmos Dining, an open-kitchen all-day room mixing Japanese and Western plates; C:Grill, built around crustacean and shellfish; Kura, for teppanyaki and sushi against a skyline backdrop; and 40 Sky Bar & Lounge for cocktails and afternoon tea. The spa sits behind a corridor finished in gold leaf, and the 38th floor holds a 20-metre heated indoor pool looking out toward the Yodo River. This is a hotel built around altitude and engineering rather than intimacy, closer in spirit to Tokyo's grand towers than to the ryokan tradition, and it suits a traveller who wants Osaka's skyline treated as a design element rather than a view glimpsed from a window. The lobby draws a local crowd at dusk for the same reason it draws guests, competition for a seat by the glass at sunset is real, which tells you something about how the building is used by the city as much as by the hotel. It reads corporate-polished rather than eccentric, precise rather than warm, and it works best for people who want that precision. You should not come if you are after a small, idiosyncratic property with a strong sense of a single owner's taste, this is a 164-room hotel inside a mixed-use tower with two banquet halls and a wedding chapel, and event traffic is part of daily life here. You should come for the four distinct dining rooms, the scale of the art collection, the direct underground link to Festival Hall next door, and rooms that treat 50 square metres as a starting point rather than a suite upgrade. The short version: A 164-room tower hotel on the 33rd to 40th floors of Nakanoshima Festival Tower West, opened in 2017, built around a 200-metre-high glass lobby, a Kohei Nawa sculpture collection, and four restaurants rather than one.
