Eight rooms across two floors, set beside the Miyagawa river eight kilometers outside Takayama: Wanosato keeps its scale small on purpose. Four of those rooms sit in separate annex buildings, each built in the thatched gassho-zukuri style but finished differently, one in Hida wood and Shunkei lacquerware with a terrace over the water, another built around a farmhouse relocated more than a century ago and kept as the only room on the property with a working irori hearth at its center. Every room, annex or main house, has heated floors and its own deep soaking bathtub drawn from the property's hot spring, along with a fridge, phone, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Breakfast is cooked to order and included, and the kitchen works to kaiseki principles, built around seasonal ingredients rather than presentation. Staff speak English, arrange a complimentary pickup from Takayama station with 24 hours' notice, and file the passport copies Japanese law requires of every registering guest. The property takes adults only, so families with children need a different base, and pets are not permitted either. Anyone wanting to walk to the old town from their room should also look elsewhere, since the city center is a drive away, not a stroll. What no other room here repeats is that farmhouse annex, a genuine building moved in rather than built to resemble one, its construction unlike any other on the property and its hearth still the single fire in the place. For two people or one traveler with a few unscheduled days, meals and a hot bath are the entire itinerary, and that turns out to be enough. Wanosato keeps to eight rooms above the Miyagawa river outside Takayama, four of them separate gassho-zukuri annexes, one built from a relocated farmhouse holding the property's only irori hearth. Cooked-to-order breakfast, kaiseki dinners, and private hot-spring baths come standard. It is adults only, with no pets.
