THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Ryotei Hanzuiryo
Fourteen detached guest rooms sit scattered across grounds built in the traditional sukiya style, a ten-minute walk from the steaming ground of Unzen Jigoku. Ryotei Hanzuiryo opened in 1992 and has stayed single-storey ever since, its scenery shifting with the four seasons rather than staying fixed behind glass. Two of the fourteen rooms come with a private open-air hot spring bath fed by a sulfur spring, and two further baths, kept outside the guest rooms, can be rented for private use, listed on the property's own guide ahead of almost anything else about the place. Beyond the water there is a restaurant serving local cuisine, a sauna, a massage room and a doctor on call, plus the quieter mechanics of a well-run guesthouse: 24-hour reception, a safe-deposit box, luggage storage, free Wi-Fi, and a garden that does the work most lobbies try to fake. Rooms carry a bathtub or shower, slippers, toiletries and VIP touches that suit a couple wanting privacy or a family travelling with a child, since babysitting and a dedicated family room are both on offer. It is less suited to anyone chasing a city break: the centre of Unzen is 13 kilometres off, pets cannot come, and the scale, fourteen rooms on one floor, means no crowd to disappear into. There is a conference hall for the odd small meeting, but this is fundamentally a place built around one hot spring bath at a time, not a lobby full of other guests. Ryotei Hanzuiryo pairs fourteen sukiya-style rooms with a sulfur hot spring, two of them fitted with a private open-air bath. Ten minutes from Unzen Jigoku's vents and 13 kilometres from town, it suits a quiet soak more than a night out.
