THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hacienda San Angel
From the bell tower above Hacienda San Angel, guests watch whales move through Banderas Bay each winter, a view that comes from the hotel's perch on a hilltop above Puerto Vallarta's Guadalupe Church, footsteps from Plaza de las Armas and Camarones Beach. The property began as Casa Bur-Sus, the villa Richard Burton bought for his wife Susan in 1977 after falling for the city while filming The Night of the Iguana, and that history still shapes the place: colonial architecture, turn-of-the-century furnishings, and gardens threaded with fountains rather than a lobby built for volume. Across its 19 rooms, three pools handle the daytime heat, and the rooftop restaurant serves dinner with the Sierra Madres on one side, the bay on the other, and fireworks over the city most nights, mariachi included. Evenings end with turndown service and a plate of chocolates, mornings with continental breakfast; in-suite spa treatments cover the rest. Pets are welcome with advance notice, but children 18 and under are not permitted at all, which settles the question of who this is for: couples and solo travelers after quiet rather than families after a pool day. The dining venue also closes for the summer stretch from June through October, so anyone counting on that rooftop table should check dates first. What sets it apart from the boutique hotels nearby isn't the size, which stays intentionally small, but the fact that a piece of old Hollywood romance is baked into the walls, not bolted on for marketing. It rewards guests who came to look at the view, not to be entertained by a schedule of activities. A hilltop hacienda above Puerto Vallarta's Guadalupe Church, built from Richard Burton's 1977 gift to his wife Susan, runs on colonial charm rather than scale: nineteen rooms, three pools, a rooftop restaurant with fireworks views. Children under 18 are not permitted, which keeps things quiet.
