THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Intercontinental Hotels Khao Yai Resort
Afternoon tea at Intercontinental Hotels Khao Yai Resort is served inside a repurposed train carriage overlooking Swan Lake, one of several vintage cars that architect Bill Bensley converted into suites and dining rooms across the property. The resort sits at the edge of Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site three hours from Bangkok, and its design leans into the region's history as a rail gateway to northeast Thailand during King Rama V's era: guests can dine in Poirot, a formal room built around the golden age of train travel, or eat Thai food cooked by a local chef at Somying's Kitchen. No other hotel in Khao Yai turns its architecture into a history lesson like this: the carriages are working suites and restaurants, not lobby decoration. Rooms carry European Byredo toiletries, individual climate control and daily housekeeping, and the grounds hold a spa, a gym, a pool, a kids club and gardens for guests who prefer to stay put between park visits. Bikes are available for the wider grounds, pets are allowed, and the property is wheelchair accessible with 24-hour reception and multilingual staff. This suits travelers drawn to a design story and to nature reached only after a half-day of travel, not to Bangkok's centre. It will feel remote and slow to anyone wanting nightlife or a short ride to the airport, and the train theme, well executed, will not appeal to guests who find novelty architecture gimmicky. For a couple or family willing to spend three or four nights near Khao Yai, tracking wildlife by day and eating inside a converted carriage by night, it offers something the area's other hotels do not. Its suites and restaurants sit inside train carriages redesigned by Bill Bensley, steps from Khao Yai National Park three hours out of Bangkok. It suits couples and families who want a design story with their wildlife, not a quick city break. No other hotel in the area does this.
