THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Tamarind Village
Morning here means coffee taken among garden courtyards shaded by centuries-old tamarind trees, the low wooden buildings arranged in the traditional Lanna style of northern Thailand rather than stacked into a tower block. The hotel sits inside Chiang Mai's old city, close enough to Chiang Mai Gate and the Three Kings Monument to reach on foot, with temples including the centuries-old Wat Umong nearby. Forty rooms spread across two low floors keep the place feeling more like a private compound than a hotel, and the restaurant, Ruen Tamarind, works from family recipes for northern Thai dishes rather than a standard hotel menu. What separates it from the boutique competition nearby is its running program of cultural exhibitions and free daily activities: flower garland making, umbrella painting, textile art shows, and a staff-led walking tour through the old town neighbourhood. There is still a pool, indoor and outdoor, and a spa built around Lanna herbal traditions, but the cultural programming is what gives repeat guests a reason to come back. Couples and solo travellers who want a quiet, walkable base with some cultural weight to it will find the pace right; families with children under six will not, since the hotel does not accept them, and anyone chasing a big international resort experience should look elsewhere. Wi-Fi is free throughout, airport transfer can be arranged for a fee, and a deposit is required at booking. It is a small hotel that behaves like one, deliberately, and the tamarind trees outside were probably older than the idea of Chiang Mai as a destination at all. Forty rooms wrapped around tamarind-shaded courtyards in Chiang Mai's old city, built in Lanna style with a restaurant working from family recipes. It suits travellers who want quiet and culture within walking distance of old town temples, not families with children under six or anyone after a large resort.
