137 Pillars House
Wat Gate Temple is a few minutes' walk from the entrance of 137 Pillars House, and the Ping River closer still, but most guests never make it past the garden. The hotel occupies a teak homestead built in the late 1800s, and its thirty suites sit across just two floors, no elevators required. Black-and-white tiled verandas, cane shades, rattan furniture, and freestanding Victorian bathtubs sit alongside flat-screen televisions and Wi-Fi, and the largest suite, Louis Leonowens, has its own private swimming pool. A butler is assigned to each stay rather than a front desk, which matters more on day three than day one. Dinner rotates between Palette, Jack Bain's Bar, and the Parlor Dining Room, with Thai and Asian dishes built from locally sourced ingredients, plus Western plates for anyone missing home. Nitra Spa & Wellness takes reservations for treatments, and there is a gym and pool for the mornings after. Green Globe certification and sustainability practices run through daily operations rather than sitting on a plaque in the lobby. None of this suits anyone chasing a rooftop bar scene or a skyline view; there is no skyline here, just a residential enclave and a garden that swallows city noise within a few steps. Families with young children should know the pool requires supervision under twelve, and a car is needed for anything beyond the immediate neighborhood. What competitors in Chiang Mai's hotel district cannot offer is the plain fact of the building itself, a nineteenth-century homestead still standing and still lived in, not a modern build styled to look old. That difference does not need explaining once you are inside it. 137 Pillars House is a nineteenth-century teak homestead turned thirty-suite hotel in Chiang Mai, minutes from Wat Gate Temple and the Ping River. Expect a personal butler, Victorian bathtubs, and a private pool in its largest suite. It is not built for skyline views or rooftop bars.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Several of the hotel's suites, including Rajah Brooke and East Borneo, keep a freestanding Victorian bathtub as their centerpiece, paired with both indoor and outdoor garden showers. The detail nods to the property's colonial-era character, giving guests a bathing ritual that feels closer to a historic residence than a typical hotel room.
