THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Nohga Hotel Ueno
Two minutes from Ueno Station's Hirokoji exit, on a corner of Higashi-Ueno where metal workshops and glass wholesalers from the district's Edo-era artisan trade still operate behind roller shutters, Nohga Hotel opened on November 11, 2018, developed by Nomura Real Estate Hotel Company and designed by UDS. Ten floors hold 130 rooms, including the single Nohga Suite, a scale that puts it closer to a well-run business hotel than a country house, and the building makes no attempt to disguise that. What it does instead is fold the surrounding craft district into every surface, a project overseen by Teruo Kurosaki, founder of the design house IDÉE, working alongside Hozu Yamamoto, president of Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, who between them treat the hotel as a rotating showcase for the artisans of Taito ward rather than a conventional lobby art programme. The ground floor gallery space runs from breakfast counter to bar across the day, lit by Koichi Futatsumata's site-specific ceiling installation, four panels of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic titled "4 GFRP UPPER" and completed the year the hotel opened, their translucence softening what would otherwise be a hard-edged commercial space. Guest rooms, seven types from double to twin to the Nohga Suite, are fitted with furniture made by Wood Work, a craft workshop a few streets away in Okachimachi, linen robes from Atmosphère Japon, and a room fragrance composed by aroma and incense designer Tomoko Saito. Staff wear forest green uniforms designed by Jun Hashimoto. Downstairs, Bistro NOHGA runs an all-day menu sourced from shops in the neighbourhood, and rental bicycles come from tokyobike, a useful detail in a part of Tokyo built for wandering rather than taxis. Glassware from Kimoto and objects from product designer SyuRo's line rotate through the public spaces on no fixed schedule, changing what you notice on a second stay. What it feels like is a design office's answer to the question of what a neighbourhood hotel could be if someone actually researched the neighbourhood, which is to say considered rather than themed, and closer in spirit to a well-edited shop than a resort. Ueno itself does a lot of the work: the Tokyo National Museum, the Ueno Toshogu shrine grounds, and the only Le Corbusier building in Japan, the National Museum of Western Art, are all within the park a short walk from the front door, so mornings tend to organise themselves around museum hours rather than hotel amenities, because there aren't many of the latter beyond a 24-hour gym and laundry. Rooms are compact in the way most central Tokyo hotel rooms are compact, a fact of land value rather than a design failure, but the craft detailing throughout means the compression rarely feels punitive. You should not come if you want spa facilities, a restaurant with a wine list worth lingering over, or the kind of spacious, view-driven room that central Tokyo rarely offers at this price point. You should not come if Ueno's shitamachi, workaday texture, closer to workshops and wholesale markets than to Ginza polish, isn't part of the appeal. You should come for the museums on your doorstep, for a hotel that treats its own neighbourhood as the amenity, and for the specific pleasure of noticing, on your third morning, that the glass you're drinking from was made two streets away. The short version: A 130-room, ten-floor hotel in Ueno's artisan district, opened 2018 by Nomura Real Estate Hotel Company with interiors curated by IDÉE founder Teruo Kurosaki, built around Taito ward's craft trade and its walk to Tokyo's best museums.
