THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Capella Kyoto
Built on the former grounds of Shinmichi Elementary School in Miyagawa-cho, the geiko and maiko district that shares its narrow lanes with Gion across the Kamo river, Capella Kyoto opened on 22 March 2026 as part of a three-building development that also restored the Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, the private training hall where the district's geiko and maiko have rehearsed for generations. The site sits steps from Kenninji, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, at 146 Komatsucho in Higashiyama Ward. Kengo Kuma and Associates designed the four-storey building, keeping it low enough to hold the rhythm of the surrounding alleyways rather than announce itself above them, while Brewin Design Office, the Singapore studio founded by Robert Cheng, handled the 89 rooms and suites, reworking the deep, narrow logic of the traditional machiya townhouse into a sequence of compressions and releases, walkways, thresholds, a shimenawa-inspired sculpture in the lobby, a courtyard with a shallow pond at its centre. It is Capella Hotels and Resorts' first property in Japan. Rooms run from Deluxe City Rooms up to the 206-square-metre Capella Suite on the top floor, with two Gion Suites looking onto Kenninji and six Onsen Suites carrying their own private hot spring baths, a rarity even by Kyoto's standards. Materials do the talking: hand-applied earthen plaster, timber joinery drawn from chōba tansu merchant chests, shoji screens, lacquer, bronze, ceramic, handmade washi paper. Auriga Spa, beneath the central courtyard, has three further private onsen rooms alongside wet and dry saunas and four treatment rooms. Dining runs to two restaurants under the SingleThread name, SoNoMa and SingleThread Entremets, alongside Yoi and Lanterne, an unusual pairing of Californian and Japanese culinary sensibility for a hotel this rooted in Higashiyama tradition. Capella Curates, the house programme, arranges a private ochaya encounter with a maiko in a teahouse that otherwise takes no outside bookings, a visit to a sandal atelier that has made bespoke zori by hand for a century and a half, and a kintsugi workshop under an urushi lacquer master. What it feels like, according to Cheng himself, is deliberately unspectacular. There is no panoramic vista, no dramatic garden reveal, and the design team has said as much: this is not a hotel built to hand you a view. It is instead woven into a working, mixed-use neighbourhood, still home to okiya and ochaya going about their evenings regardless of who is staying next door. The Kaburenjo Theatre, restored and reactivated as part of the same development, gives guests something closer to witnessing a living tradition than watching a hotel-branded performance. It suits a traveller who finds more in restraint than in spectacle, who would rather spend an evening near the sound of a shamisen drifting from a teahouse window than in a rooftop bar with a skyline. You should not come if you want sweeping views, resort-style grounds, or the sense of being somewhere separate from the city around you, because Capella Kyoto has none of that on offer and is not trying to. You should come if you want to stay inside a still-functioning geisha district without the theatre of an "immersive" package built around it, in rooms detailed with the kind of material patience that rewards a slow look rather than a quick photograph. The short version: An 89-room Kengo Kuma and Brewin Design Office hotel in Kyoto's Miyagawa-cho geisha district, built on a former schoolyard beside a restored geiko theatre, with two SingleThread restaurants and six private-onsen suites.
