THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Novecento Boutique Hotel
Down a quiet calle off Campo San Maurizio, a few minutes' walk from St Mark's Square, a fireplace burns in a second-floor sitting room where guests play chess or read from the library shelves. Novecento Boutique Hotel keeps only nine rooms, each furnished with Orientalist-era antiques, multi-ethnic pieces, and textiles the Romanelli family gathered on their own travels through Asia and North Africa, set against original Venetian marble and wooden floors. Two of the rooms showcase collaborations with Italian interior designers. The ivy-draped inner courtyard changes colour with the seasons and makes a quiet stop for coffee between museum visits; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Teatro La Fenice, and the Academy Gallery are all a short walk away. Staff move between English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish, arrange dry cleaning and luggage storage, and keep a doctor on call. Children have their own playroom, pets are welcome, and breakfast can be taken in the room instead of downstairs. There is no parking, so this suits guests without a car more than those who like to drive, and it will read as intimate rather than spacious to anyone used to hotel-chain scale. What sets Novecento apart from the city's other boutique addresses is that eclectic, well-travelled interior, an actual collection rather than a styled one, inherited and added to rather than bought in bulk. Check-in runs from 2pm, check-out by 11am. It is a hotel for people who would rather sit by a fire with a book than queue at a front desk, and who leave Venice remembering a room rather than an itinerary. Nine rooms off a quiet calle near St Mark's Square, filled with Orientalist antiques and textiles the Romanelli family collected on their travels. A fireplace, a library, and an ivy-draped courtyard sit steps from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. There is no on-site parking, so arrive on foot.
