THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice Hotel
The wooden shuttle boat leaves San Marco Square, crosses open lagoon water, and ten minutes later docks at a private island where a 12th-century chapel stands among restored monastery walls. San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice Hotel occupies that island alone, an arrangement no hotel inside the city can offer: guests trade the press of alleys and bridges for nearly fifteen acres of gardens, courtyards, and terraces, then take the free boat back whenever San Marco calls, on a schedule that runs every half hour. The 196 rooms and suites are spread across three floors, ranging from 35 to 50 square metre rooms up to 85 to 200 square metre suites, with high Venetian ceilings and garden or lagoon views throughout; the San Clemente Suite was named Europe's Leading Hotel Suite in 2018. Acquerello, the signature restaurant, was named Best Italian Restaurant in Europe by the Haute Grandeur Awards, and sits alongside two more restaurants and three bars, one of them poolside. The Merchant of Venice Spa, awarded Europe's Best Hotel Spa in 2019, has a couples suite, sauna, and steam bath, plus a heated outdoor pool, indoor pool, tennis court, and pitch-and-putt course. A kids club, playroom, and babysitting cover families, though guests under 15 need adult supervision to use the spa itself, and pets are allowed throughout. This suits couples and families who want Venice without queuing for it, and who don't mind booking spa treatments and tee times ahead. It doesn't suit anyone who wants to step straight out the door into the Rialto crowds. What stays with you is the quiet: a nine-hundred-year-old monastery, alone on its own island, with the city one boat ride away. San Clemente Palace Kempinski sits alone on a private lagoon island, a 900-year-old monastery reached only by the hotel's own boat, ten minutes from San Marco. It suits those who want Venice without the crowds, not those who want to walk straight into them.

San Clemente Palace occupies its own island in the Venice lagoon, with rooms and suites shaped by twelfth-century Romanesque heritage and a series of restored monastery buildings. The grounds include a historic church, giving the resort a sense of history uncommon among hotels in central Venice.
