On the corner of Campo Santa Sofia and the Strada Nuova, where the Grand Canal bends past the Rialto fish market, a Byzantine-Gothic palace built in the fourteenth century by the Morosini family has watched Venice go by for over six hundred years. In 1661 it was bought by Nicolò Sagredo, an ambassador to the courts of Spain, Germany and France who would later serve as the 105th Doge of Venice, from 1675 until his death in 1676, and his descendant Zaccaria Sagredo commissioned the architect Tommaso Temanza to rework the interiors in the eighteenth century, adding the two-flight marble staircase by Andrea Tirali in 1734 that still carries guests past a Pietro Longhi fresco into the first-floor portego. After a long spell as municipal offices, the palace reopened in 2007 following extensive restoration, and now runs as 42 rooms and suites, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and bookable through Hilton's LXR collection, still listed as a national monument by the Italian state. The public rooms do most of the talking. Breakfast is served under Giambattista Tiepolo's ceiling fresco, "Tribute to Venice," in what is now known as the Sala di Tiepolo, and the Sala del Doge carries a ceiling painting by Nicolò Bambini depicting the defeat of the vices, alongside further works by Sebastiano Ricci. One of the bedrooms, the Library Suite, occupies what was once a private library said to have held ten thousand volumes. Rooms mix rich brocades, gilt mirrors and Murano glass with marble bathrooms and air conditioning, some looking onto the Grand Canal, others onto the rooftops or the small Campo Santa Sofia below. L'Alcova restaurant, under chef Michele Potenza, runs a terrace directly on the canal facing the Rialto Market, and Bar L'Incontro handles the aperitivo hour before dinner. Staying here is closer to house-sitting for a doge than checking into a hotel, which is precisely the point and precisely the risk. The scale is intimate rather than grand, forty-two rooms behind a facade that could easily hide four hundred, and the art collection is not curated so much as inherited, which gives the whole place a slightly unbothered, family-attic quality that newer Venetian hotels spend fortunes trying to fake. Galileo is said to have debated the nature of the universe here with his close friend Gianfrancesco Sagredo, a detail the hotel is in no hurry to explain to you unless you ask. You should not come if you want minimalism, or if a fresco ceiling over your cereal strikes you as excessive, or if you're allergic to the sound of gondoliers calling to each other under your window at seven in the morning. The hotel also does a steady trade in weddings and private events, so an empty portego is not guaranteed on any given evening. You should come if you want to sleep inside a five-century family history rather than read about it, and if the idea of marble stairs designed for a Doge's household holds more appeal than a rooftop infinity pool.
